Role Overview
As a Data Scientist, you will connect business challenges with data-led solutions. The position blends statistics, mathematics, domain knowledge, consulting thinking, and software engineering. You will convert business needs into data problems, investigate data for patterns and insights, build and assess models, and deploy solutions into applications and workflows so they continue to create value over time.
The role also involves working closely with business processes and helping improve how data is managed, protected, migrated, and governed. You will contribute to policies and standards that keep data secure, private, accurate, accessible, and useful.
Job Scope
- Carry out applied research and development work focused on privacy technologies.
- Plan and run structured experiments to assess emerging PETs and related solutions.
- Create proof-of-concepts that show practical feasibility and business impact.
- Track academic and technical research, then convert useful findings into deployable solutions.
- Contribute knowledge through publications and sharing sessions with government and international stakeholders.
- Work with government agencies to understand privacy needs and operational limitations.
- Design and run pilot programs to test privacy technology solutions.
- Collect feedback from users and improve solutions based on real-world deployment learnings.
- Provide technical guidance and implementation support during privacy technology adoption.
- Identify government data problems that can be addressed using privacy-enhancing technologies.
- Build scalable solutions suitable for adoption across the whole-of-government ecosystem.
- Define implementation routes and adoption frameworks for new privacy technologies.
- Collaborate with data scientists, data engineers, software engineers, and product managers.
- Work with agencies to align technical solutions with regulatory and governance requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or a higher qualification in Computer Science, Data Science, Business Analytics, or a related discipline, along with 2–3 years of relevant professional experience.
- Strong grounding in machine learning, with practical experience in model building and experimentation.
- Solid Python programming skills and hands-on use of ML libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and scikit-learn.
- Ability to inspect model performance, troubleshoot training problems, and design experiments that improve reliability and accuracy.
- Experience reading, summarising, and evaluating academic papers and technical research.
- Proven ability to design and execute rigorous experiments that test hypotheses and measure outcomes.
- Comfort handling ambiguous problems and exploring novel approaches to complex challenges.
- Curiosity and a willingness to learn new domains, especially data privacy.
- Clear communication skills for explaining technical ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced Agile environment.
- Exposure to privacy-enhancing technologies such as anonymisation, synthetic data generation, or differential privacy is an advantage.
- Familiarity with front-end integration workflows using Next.js or React is a plus.
- Previous experience working in multidisciplinary teams is beneficial.
