About the role
Correctional Officers play a key part in maintaining community safety while supporting offenders to move toward better outcomes. In this role, you will supervise inmates in correctional facilities, including prisons and court cells across New South Wales. The work involves direct interaction with inmates, maintaining order and safety, carrying out checks, observing behaviour, and communicating clearly and professionally.
Key duties
- Complete everyday operational duties in line with legislation, Corrective Services NSW requirements, and NSW Department of Communities and Justice policies and procedures to support inmate safety, wellbeing, security, and rehabilitation.
- Carry out routine accountability activities such as muster, head counts, and ongoing observation of offenders.
- Perform searches and other detection tasks to identify and remove contraband from the facility or court complex, while helping maintain a safe environment for staff, visitors, and offenders.
- Handle inmate requests for services and escalate matters when appropriate.
- Oversee offender activities in work areas, living areas, and approved zones, ensuring operations are fair, equitable, and carried out safely and efficiently.

Role requirements
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- A current and valid driver licence is required.
- Applicants must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or a permanent resident.
- You need to be willing to complete a Certificate III in Correctional Practice.
- You must meet the medical standards for the role and have a reasonable level of fitness.
- Candidates must disclose any visible body art or modifications on the face, scalp, ears, neck, or hands, as well as any tattoos or modifications that are offensive in nature. This applies to anything visible beyond a fastened collar or buttoned cuff of a long-sleeve shirt.
- Applicants should review the dress manual for further guidance.

- Provide an up-to-date resume of no more than 2 pages.
- Answer all questions in the online application form honestly and accurately.
Important application rules
- You can only apply for a Correctional Officer role with Corrective Services NSW once every 12 months.
- Your application will be withdrawn if you have applied for a casual or ongoing Correctional Officer role within Corrective Services NSW in the past 12 months.
- Your application will also be withdrawn if you are already in the recruitment process for another Correctional Officer role or location within a correctional centre.
