This position sits within the Building Control team and focuses on compliance, investigation, and enforcement work under the Building Act and related bylaws.

The role suits someone who enjoys hands-on technical investigations, solving complex issues, and working with property owners and industry stakeholders to deliver safe outcomes in a timely way.

What you will do

  • Examine buildings that may be dangerous, unsafe, or insanitary and take the right follow-up action.
  • Manage processes for earthquake-prone and unsafe buildings, including issuing notices and maintaining national records.
  • Carry out compliance and enforcement activity related to pools, compliance schedules, and building warrants of fitness.
  • Perform onsite checks of specified systems and follow up on unresolved compliance issues.
  • Handle customer questions and provide practical guidance to owners, tenants, and industry professionals.
  • Work with internal colleagues and legal advisers when enforcement steps are needed.
  • Support emergency response work and building recovery efforts after events when required.

What you need to bring

You should be a confident and practical compliance professional who is comfortable applying legislation, working with people, and helping improve building safety across the city.

  • A Reg 18 qualification or NZQA Level 6 qualification in Building Regulation.
  • At least 5 years of experience in building compliance or the building industry.
  • Working knowledge of compliance, investigation, or enforcement processes, ideally within local government.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to deal constructively with owners, tenants, and industry representatives.
  • Good judgement, accuracy, and the ability to manage several priorities at once.
  • A current clean driver’s licence and willingness to work out in the community.
  • Experience in compliance, law enforcement, and/or regulatory investigations is essential.
