Description de l'emploi

Role overview

University Hospitals Dorset is hiring a Biomedical Scientist to join its welcoming Microbiology department. The post is based in the modern Dorset Pathology Hub at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital, where the laboratory operates as a fully computerised, UKAS-accredited, IBMS-approved training facility. The team delivers a broad diagnostic microbiology service for University Hospitals Dorset and other healthcare organisations across the region.

Key duties

The role covers the full range of diagnostic microbiology work, including bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, serology and molecular diagnostics. You will handle clinical specimens through processing, analysis and reporting, while helping to maintain strong standards in quality, patient safety and overall service delivery. There will also be opportunities to build experience across different sections of the department with support from a structured training programme.

Candidate profile

Applicants with HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist are preferred. However, the trust will also consider candidates who are close to finishing their IBMS Registration Portfolio or who are still waiting for HCPC registration. Those not yet registered may be offered a Trainee Biomedical Scientist role under Annex 21 arrangements until registration is secured.

An IBMS-accredited Biomedical Science degree, or an equivalent qualification that is accepted for HCPC registration, is required. Experience in an NHS laboratory is desirable but not mandatory.

Working pattern and location

The base location is The Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Dorset Pathology Hub. The role requires participation in evening, weekend and extended-hours rotas.

Additional information

University Hospitals Dorset is currently investing in service transformation through the New Hospital Programme. As part of this work, clinical services across The Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole Hospital are being reorganised, with The Royal Bournemouth Hospital becoming the main emergency and critical care site and Poole Hospital taking on the planned care function. The Microbiology laboratory remains located within the Dorset Pathology Hub at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

The organisation has active staff networks including Women’s, DEN, Pride, EU, Pro Ability and Armed Forces. It also participates in Disability Confident and Armed Forces Covenant interview schemes.

AI tools may be used in the application process, but applicants must ensure their submission truthfully reflects their own experience and abilities. Honesty and integrity are expected throughout recruitment.

Interview information

The interview date is scheduled for 24 July.
