Description de l'emploi
Role overview
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is expanding its pathology capability and is introducing a new Biomedical Science Assistant team within the Pre-Analytics area at Northern General Hospital. The post sits within a modern, UKAS-accredited laboratory and will support the future delivery of Blood Sciences services through a flexible and capable workforce.
This opportunity is aimed at people who are enthusiastic, adaptable and interested in helping shape a new approach to working within Laboratory Medicine, with a focus on continuous improvement and service development.
What the role involves
You will support the patient pathway by helping with the receipt, preparation and processing of samples. The work includes sample reception, front-of-house laboratory reception, dealing with patients and service users, scanning documents, maintaining electronic records, entering data, handling samples and assisting scientific colleagues in delivering a safe, efficient diagnostic service.
The post is part of a 24/7 laboratory operation. The successful candidate will need to work a full rotating rota covering 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including day shifts, nights, weekends and bank holidays, depending on service demand.
Key duties
Day-to-day tasks include receiving, preparing, processing and distributing patient samples in line with local procedures. You will provide a professional reception service at the front desk of the laboratory, serving as the first point of contact for patients, visitors, healthcare professionals and other service users.
Administrative responsibilities include accurate data entry, scanning paperwork, electronic filing and keeping laboratory records up to date. You will use laboratory information systems to ensure samples are tracked and processed correctly, support scientific staff with routine laboratory work, respond to queries by phone or in person, and flag problems such as sample acceptance issues or other non-conformities according to procedure. You will also store, retrieve and dispose of biological material safely and appropriately.
Person profile
This is a good fit for someone with strong attention to detail, clear communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team. The work directly contributes to patient care, so accuracy, professionalism and reliability are essential.
Service context and development
You will join an organisation that values its staff and the community it serves, with a strong reputation in both NHS delivery and research. The Trust offers staff benefits, support for professional development and policies intended to help balance work and personal life.
You will also become part of South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology during an important period of transformation, as services across the region are brought together to create high-quality, sustainable and innovative laboratory medicine for patients.
As part of this newly established workforce, you will have the chance to help develop new ways of working and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the service.
Training and progression
The service is committed to developing staff through training and career progression opportunities. Support may include apprenticeships, laboratory competencies, academic qualifications and routes for progression within Laboratory Medicine.
The organisation places a strong emphasis on workforce development, helping people reach their potential and creating opportunities across pathology.
