About the School
Long Bay College is a co-educational secondary school set in a calm area close to Long Bay Beach and the lively Long Bay Village. Established in 1975, the college has around 1,900 students and 170 teachers and support staff.
Role Overview
The college is looking for an experienced Workshop Technician to support its Technology Faculty. The faculty delivers a range of practical, workshop-focused subjects such as Wood Technology, Engineering, and Design Technology.
Core Duties
- Manage storerooms so supplies are arranged efficiently and kept well stocked.
- Keep inventory at the right level so materials are always available when needed.
- Prepare workshop materials as requested by the curriculum lead.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with outside suppliers.
- Stay informed about health and safety obligations and promptly raise any concerns with the appropriate staff.
- Follow workshop safety procedures that are taught in class and required in the workspace.
- Handle routine workshop and classroom upkeep according to the maintenance plan.
- Make sure workshop machinery remains safe and operational, including lathes, milling machines, saws, sanders, drilling machines, welders, and similar equipment.
- Maintain laser cutters and 3D printers.
- Look after hand and cutting tools, including sharpening chisels and replacing blades when needed.
- Support the annual refresh of workshop spaces, such as replacing tabletops and related fittings.
- Carry out other reasonable workshop-related tasks as required from time to time.

Strong interpersonal skills are important, including the ability to work respectfully with teenagers and maintain regular communication with staff. A strong eye for detail and a solid understanding of workshop health and safety expectations are essential.

Additional Information
- This is a part-time role for 16 hours per week, worked between 8:30am and 4:30pm Monday to Friday, during term time only for 40 weeks per year. Working times can be adjusted depending on faculty needs.
- The appointment is fixed term for 1 year, with the possibility of an extension.
- Pay is based on Support Staff in Schools’ Collective Agreement Grade 2, with an hourly rate of $27.11 to $29.61, plus any qualification allowance that applies.
- Applicants must have a current driver’s licence and be legally entitled to work in New Zealand.
- Appointment depends on receiving a satisfactory police vet.
