Role overview

Rocket Software is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to contribute to the design, build, and support of strategic products for IBM z/OS mainframes. In this position, you will serve as a dependable technical authority, taking responsibility for important components across one or more products, while working with a globally distributed group of engineering specialists.

You will work with other engineers to shape, improve, and maintain a leading portfolio of system-level products. The role is ideal for someone with a strong grasp of modern programming languages, experience in enterprise software development, and a real interest in IBM mainframe environments. You will also be expected to keep learning, share expertise, and help raise the technical bar across the team.

Key responsibilities

  • Take ownership of shared software components used across multiple Rocket products, with a focus on scale, stability, and long-term supportability.
  • Lead the technical direction for shared platform capabilities, including design decisions and engineering standards across teams.
  • Work as a go-to expert who supports other engineers through mentoring, training, documentation, and practical guidance on using shared components effectively.
  • Partner across product and engineering groups to deliver strategic solutions, especially in modernization efforts and middleware layers.
  • Spot recurring technical issues and improve platform performance, capability, and developer experience proactively.

Required experience and skills

  • Strong hands-on proficiency in C, C++, and Java.
  • Working familiarity with IBM mainframe operating systems, particularly z/OS.
  • Background in building, maintaining, or supporting complex software systems that must perform at a high level.

Preferred experience

  • Experience programming in High Level Assembler (HLASM).
  • Exposure to ISPF, REXX, and DTL.
  • Technical understanding of major mainframe subsystems such as IMS and CICS.

What the role calls for

The right candidate will bring sound technical judgment, an architectural approach to problem-solving, strong attention to detail, and enthusiasm for working in a technically deep and highly collaborative environment. You should also be proactive about researching, assessing, and applying new technologies, processes, and engineering practices.
