Role overview

AbbVie is hiring an NPI Process Engineer for its Technical Operations team at Manorhamilton Road in Sligo on a 12-month fixed-term contract. The role centers on technical support for manufacturing from a chemistry and chemical engineering standpoint, along with the development of improved and more cost-effective processes.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out process development work for existing products and late-stage clinical products, including scale-up activities for plant equipment.
  • Provide hands-on technical help to Production Team Leaders to improve equipment performance and resolve process issues.
  • Support manufacturing and chemistry-related troubleshooting, optimization, cost-saving initiatives, and training/coaching for production staff.
  • Lead and plan technical transfer activities for future product introductions.
  • Identify, develop, and progress continuous improvement initiatives in collaboration with process engineers and cross-functional teams.
  • Optimize processes and equipment to improve chemistry performance, cleaning effectiveness, product quality, yield, and throughput, while recommending and implementing efficiency measures.
  • Support process front runs and use tests for both NPI and commercial operations.
  • Create process control recipes for new product introductions and refine existing commercial recipes.
  • Provide engineering input for manufacturing and digital control system issues, including troubleshooting, training, and coaching.
  • Assist with commissioning and validation work during project start-up.
  • Develop and maintain batch and cleaning documentation for new product introductions.
  • Prepare feasibility studies and operating budgets for upcoming product introductions.

Requirements

  • A third-level degree or higher in chemical engineering, process engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • At least 2 years of process engineering experience in a relevant manufacturing environment, or 3+ years in process chemistry with experience in batch processing, automation, technical transfers, scale-up, commissioning, and validation in a cGMP pharmaceutical setting.
  • Prior exposure to start-up environments or new product introductions in pharmaceutical manufacturing is preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of cGMP and relevant pharmaceutical regulatory expectations is an advantage.
  • Proven project management ability, with a track record of delivering on time, within budget, and to required quality standards.
