Role overview

This position focuses on creating, evaluating, and improving mechanical systems, equipment, and product packaging. The role involves feasibility assessment, design validation, prototype support, and collaboration with drafting, manufacturing, and cross-functional engineering teams. The work also draws on thermal and electrical engineering fundamentals to support early-stage conceptual and architectural design.

Key responsibilities

  • Contribute to medium-sized mechanical engineering initiatives with controlled risk and resource needs, working closely with cross-functional teams on Cisco products.
  • Move medium-level product features from architecture and design through fabrication and final delivery in line with development requirements.
  • Support manufacturing teams by improving fixture designs and streamlining assembly processes.
  • Use FMEA methods to troubleshoot and address fabrication and manufacturing concerns.
  • Create test plans, reliability checks, failure analyses, and verification criteria for design elements, materials, parts, and finished products.
  • Carry out structural simulations and stress testing, including coordination with the DVT team to uncover and resolve design issues.
  • Perform detailed stack-up tolerance studies at the system level.
  • Contribute to design development from concept to usability, incorporating input from customers and marketing teams.
  • Define bill of materials standards and select suitable materials to improve yield and reduce cost.
  • Ensure products and materials are suitable for high-volume manufacturing and assembly.
  • Support cost-model analysis to help meet system COGS targets.
  • Lead feasibility and prototyping activities so that customer expectations and product guidelines are satisfied.
  • Guide project teams during major product builds and establish feasibility-testing methods while ensuring standards are met.
  • Prepare technical justification reports and apply RAS goals in product decisions.
  • Conduct advanced mechanical simulations, including FEA, to validate design features.
  • Assist with system enclosure layout using a strong understanding of thermal principles.
  • Prepare detailed design information for drafting and packaging documentation.
  • Direct support staff involved in detailed design, prototype fabrication, and design testing.

Minimum qualifications

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree with 7 years of related experience, or a Master’s degree with 4 years of related experience, or a PhD with 1 year of related experience.
