About the role

The Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand is seeking a permanent Flight Examiner to join its Licensing and Standards Unit. The role can be based in Wellington, Auckland, or Christchurch, and other locations in New Zealand may also be considered. A significant part of this position involves working with both internal teams and external aviation organisations, making relationship-building and stakeholder engagement essential.

Reporting to the Head of Licensing and Standards, you will work alongside four other Flight Examiners. The role is central to maintaining aviation standards by carrying out examinations of industry-based Flight Examiners to confirm compliance with the requirements of the Civil Aviation Act. In addition, you will conduct flight tests and other assessments delegated by the Director of CAA. Because of these duties, regular travel and periods away from home are required.

This position also involves researching flight standards, advising on regulatory matters, and helping shape policy for the ongoing maintenance, review, and development of flight standards. The focus is on flight training, licensing, and ratings under Part 61, although the scope is not limited to this area.

Compensation

The salary range for this role is NZD 136,939 to NZD 168,191 per year. The starting salary will depend on the candidate’s knowledge, experience, skills, and internal pay alignment.

What you will bring

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build credible professional relationships across the aviation sector.
  • An ICAO Professional Pilot Licence, either ATPL or CPL, with an Instrument Rating.
  • Instructor Category A or B Rating, plus any applicable Flight Examiner approvals.
  • Equivalent military aviation experience will also be considered.
  • Extensive and varied aviation experience, along with practical operational knowledge across CAR Parts 61, 91, 119, 135, and 141.
  • The ability to work confidently with industry bodies and maintain approachable, professional relationships.
