Role overview
Lonely Planet is hiring a contract Editor for its Inspiration & Gift portfolio. The position focuses on developing and delivering illustrated nonfiction travel books and gift products for a global audience. It suits an editor with strong editorial judgment, hands-on project management ability, and experience working on deadline-driven, visually led publishing projects.
You will work closely with editorial, design, production, and the broader content team to move books and products from idea stage through publication. The job involves shaping concepts, coordinating contributors, refining content, and making sure each project stays on brief, on budget, and on schedule while meeting a high editorial standard.
This is a full-time contract role that can be performed remotely from Ireland or the United Kingdom.
What you will do
- Guide a list of illustrated nonfiction travel and gift titles from early concept to final publication.
- Bring original ideas to Lonely Planet’s Inspiration & Gift range for international release.
- Study publishing, market, and consumer trends to inform new book and product concepts.
- Help prepare pitch decks, product briefs, proposals, competitor analysis, P&Ls, and internal presentations.
- Identify, brief, and coordinate external contributors such as writers, editors, illustrators, designers, photographers, cartographers, and packagers.
- Assess manuscripts, image choices, layouts, and proofs to ensure they match the brief, house style, and quality standards.
- Work closely with design and production teams to keep schedules, budgets, and approvals moving smoothly through each stage.
- Track and support workflows, timelines, budgets, contracts, and purchase orders.
- Carry out or assist with image research when needed.
- Prepare editorial assets that support sales and marketing, including catalogs, BLADs, and sales kits.
- Represent the Inspiration & Gift list within the wider Lonely Planet content team and collaborate across functions as needed.
What we are looking for
- At least 4 years of editorial experience in publishing or a similar editorial setting.
- Prior work on illustrated nonfiction titles.
- Strong editorial instincts with close attention to structure, tone, quality, and detail.
- Proven ability to manage several titles and deadlines at the same time.
- A deadline-focused approach with dependable follow-through.
- A practical, solution-oriented mindset and the ability to solve problems quickly.
- Experience commissioning and managing freelancers and other external partners.
- Working knowledge of publishing workflows from concept stage through final files, including editorial, design, production, and print.
- Comfort collaborating across editorial, design, production, and commercial teams.
- Genuine interest in travel, lifestyle, culture, or related subject areas.
- InDesign knowledge is an added advantage.
Success in this role
- You bring clear editorial judgment and make decisions with confidence.
- You stay organised while balancing competing priorities.
- You collaborate well, but can also keep work moving independently.
- You remain calm under pressure and adapt well when plans change.
- You care about both the quality of the content and the process used to create it.

This may represent base salary alone or base salary plus target bonus, depending on the role. Where eligible, equity may be offered separately and is not included in this range. Final pay depends on location, experience, and qualifications.
