Role overview
This role is a partnership opportunity with ALPA (Arnhem Land Progress Aboriginal Corporation), a major Aboriginal-owned benevolent corporation in Australia. It is suited to people who want to apply their skills in some of the most remote and scenic parts of Northern Australia while contributing to the social and economic progress of local communities.
Position summary
Reporting to the Store Manager, you will help keep daily store activity running smoothly so the community has access to nutritious food, safe services, and essential everyday items.
Key duties
- Assist the Store Manager with routine store operations and work across a fortnightly roster that includes evenings and weekends.
- Carry out hands-on work such as unloading pallets, replenishing shelves, and other manual handling duties.
- Oversee end-of-day store shut-down tasks and reconcile cash at close.
- Coach and train local team members to support steady, meaningful employment.
- Help run café or takeaway service areas while upholding strict food safety practices.
- Take part in stock counts, safety inspections, and compliance checks to support the store’s long-term sustainability.
- Follow a 6 to 12 month development pathway aimed at progressing into a Store Management position.
What you need
You should be a resilient, practical leader who is comfortable being hands-on and who shows genuine respect for cultural diversity.
Applicants should have at least 3 years of experience in retail or another fast-moving environment, along with confidence using electronic retail systems for POS, inventory control, and staff management.
Strong people skills are important, including the ability to communicate clearly with individuals from different cultural and language backgrounds.
You’ll need to align your daily work with ALPA’s values and mission, maintain a strong focus on workplace health and safety, and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
This job also requires the physical ability to stand for long periods and handle manual tasks.
Mandatory conditions
Applicants must either hold, or be able to obtain, an unrestricted NT C Class driver’s licence and Certificate III in Retail.
You must be willing to live in remote communities in accommodation that is provided and may be shared.
Travel by small light aircraft is required, and aviation safety rules include a weight limit of 140 kg.
