About the role
AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for planning, designing, delivering, and running the worldwide infrastructure that powers AWS. This includes the data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling systems that keep customer services available around the clock. The work involves complex, large-scale engineering challenges and collaboration across many technical and operational teams.
In Auckland, there is an immediate opening for an Electrical Colo Regional Engineer. This position is suited to someone who is enthusiastic about high-scale infrastructure work and wants to contribute to data center projects that support growing customer demand. In this role, you will provide end-to-end engineering support for data centers, from early design stages through site improvements and ongoing maintenance. You will serve as the main technical point of contact for your region when expert advice is needed.
What you will do
You will lead and support projects that help data centers meet changing capacity and performance needs. The role requires sound engineering judgment, a strong attention to detail, and comfort making recommendations even when information is incomplete. It also calls for experience working with engineering projects and consultants, building strong working relationships, and being willing to spend time in the field to assess issues firsthand.
- Partner with colocation vendors to review designs for new regional data centers, provide input, review submissions, and ensure AWS requirements are reflected in the final design.
- Serve as the resident engineer on new colocation construction efforts and support construction, commissioning, and handover activities.
- Investigate site and equipment failures, perform root cause analysis, and prepare corrective action documentation.
- Support operational issues through on-demand training, detailed reviews of operating procedures, and event support for critical equipment.
- Provide engineering input for upgrades and design solutions at existing data centers to improve capacity, reliability, availability, and efficiency.
- Work with operating partners to lead, review, and approve design changes for colocation facilities aimed at better performance and consistency.
- Coordinate with operating partners, data center design engineering, server hardware, and environmental health and safety teams to uphold standards for reliable service delivery.
- Handle multiple projects at the same time, including work across more than one geographic region.
- Lead engineering site audits at leased or colocation sites and prepare reports that identify risks along with recommended mitigation and remediation actions.
Experience and qualifications
To be successful in this role, you should have a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. The position calls for more than 4 years of experience in industrial or commercial engineering within mission-critical environments such as data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities. You should also bring experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities, as well as hands-on commissioning experience.
Preferred qualifications include a Professional Engineer License, familiarity with local building codes and regulations, experience taking design concepts from exploration through development and into deployment or mass production, and the ability to read, interpret, and produce construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents. An additional 4+ years of commissioning experience is also preferred.
Team and culture
AWS emphasizes diversity of experience and welcomes candidates whose careers have followed nontraditional paths. The team promotes inclusion, curiosity, mentorship, career growth, and work-life balance. You may work on both local and global projects while collaborating with many different teams responsible for data center operations.
