Construction Manager - Civil

Role overview

This position is focused on civil construction activities for electrical substations. The work covers foundations, control buildings, cable trenches, equipment support structures, drainage, and site development, with the goal of ensuring all civil elements safely accommodate electrical equipment and meet required standards.

Core civil construction scope

• Carry out site preparation, setting-out, and layout work for the substation area.
• Review civil drawings, electrical layouts, and technical specifications before work begins.
• Coordinate with survey personnel for marking levels and site positioning.
• Verify that grading and earthworks are completed correctly prior to construction.
• Identify and mark locations for transformer foundations, gantry structures, equipment pedestals, and the control building.
• Oversee reinforced concrete foundations for transformers, circuit breakers, lightning masts, gantry structures, and cable support structures.
• Check reinforcement placement, shuttering/formwork, concrete placement, and anchor bolt alignment for electrical equipment.
• Supervise construction of the substation control building, including foundations, structural concrete, block or brick walls, roof slab, and finishing works.
• Ensure the control building includes the required rooms such as switchgear, relay, and battery rooms as per the design.
• Monitor the building of cable trenches, underground ducts, manholes, and handholes with proper dimensions, slope, and drainage.
• Oversee transformer oil pits and oil containment systems, including drainage arrangements and oil-water separators that comply with environmental requirements.
• Manage internal roads, gravel or crushed-stone yards, and equipment foundation areas, ensuring correct compaction and grading.

Quality, coordination, and compliance

• Confirm that all civil works are executed in line with project specifications, codes, and standards.
• Check dimensions, levels, and alignment both during and after construction.
• Coordinate testing activities such as concrete cube tests and soil compaction tests.
• Work closely with electrical engineers and installation teams to keep civil progress aligned with equipment installation schedules.
• Make sure structures are ready before equipment erection and cable laying begin.
• Support the team during equipment installation and cable-related activities.
• Maintain site safety during excavation, heavy equipment usage, and general construction operations.
• Promote safe work methods and the consistent use of personal protective equipment.

Reporting and records

• Prepare daily progress updates and site reports.
• Keep records for concrete pours, material receipts, and inspection outcomes.
• Assist with quantity measurements and billing-related work.
