Role Overview

Book of the Month’s Production Design team is hiring a Production Design Assistant to help bring Book of the Month and Allurial titles to life. This position reports to the Manager of Book Design & Production and supports the creation of the books members receive and enjoy.

This is a practical, hands-on opportunity to deepen your knowledge of bookmaking and print production. You will prepare files for press, coordinate proof approvals with printing partners, and work closely with stakeholders across the business. The team is especially interested in someone who values well-crafted books, wants to strengthen their production design skills, and is excited to see their work on readers’ shelves.

What You’ll Do

• Partner with the Production Design and Editorial teams to create polished, press-ready layouts and files.
• Keep work moving on schedule by staying organized, managing time well, and meeting important deadlines.
• Develop productive working relationships with internal partners and printing vendors.
• Stay in contact with printers to monitor timelines, delays, and quality assurance concerns.
• Manage proof approvals by downloading files, circulating them for review, and sending approvals or revision notes back to the printer.
• Take part in trainings and meetings with a strong willingness to learn.

What We’re Looking For

• 1–5 years of practical experience in print production design.
• Strong working knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat.
• A bachelor’s degree in design or a related creative field is preferred.
• Genuine interest in learning the full bookmaking process; prior exposure to book production or publishing is preferred.
• Strong work habits, with the ability to handle demanding workloads and tight timelines.
• A growth-oriented attitude and comfort using feedback to improve.
• Clear, professional communication skills, both spoken and written.
• A strong attention to detail, particularly in design and production work.
• Flexibility to adapt when priorities, creative direction, or processes change.
• Comfort with procedure-based work, accurate tracking, and keeping files current.
• Enthusiasm for well-designed books and strong visual craft.

Salary

The expected pay range for this role is $60,000 to $80,000 per year.

Additional Information

This position is based in New York, NY and is an on-site full-time role.
