About the role

WSP is hiring a Transport Planner to join its Passenger Transit Group within the Transport Planning & Mobility team. This position supports passenger transit work across the UK and is based in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, or Newcastle, with a hybrid setup that combines office and home working. Candidates who are interested but would need a different WSP office base can discuss options with the hiring team.

The role suits someone who wants to contribute to meaningful transport work, help deliver projects from early concept through to completion, and collaborate with specialists across multiple disciplines. The team works across a wide range of passenger modes and supports both public and private sector clients.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of passenger transit schemes and projects from the initial stage through delivery.
  • Prepare and contribute to project and proposal work, including both technical and commercial inputs, while maintaining strong quality standards and meeting client needs.
  • Apply knowledge of passenger transit to help produce effective outcomes for clients.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams across WSP to deliver larger projects from concept to completion.
  • Assist in winning and delivering work for the local client portfolio.
  • Help support the financial outcome of projects and the commercial success of the team.
  • Contribute to WSP’s key priorities: people; clients and growth; operations; and expertise.
  • Work with the Net Zero and Future Mobility teams on innovative strategies for public and private sector clients.
  • Act as a contributor within the wider expertise practice group.

Team and working environment

The Passenger Transit leadership group is spread across the UK and leads regional client relationships while supporting specialist projects. The wider UK Passenger Transit team is around 30 people strong, with additional support from colleagues around the global business. This structure allows the team to assemble substantial multidisciplinary groups for whole-life, multi-stage project delivery.

The group is mode-agnostic and works across both road and rail options. Many team members bring operational experience and have worked with Regional, Combined, and Local Authorities, giving the team practical insight into client challenges. Typical clients include developers, Local Authorities, Sub-National Transport Bodies, and Combined Authorities.

What the role requires

  • Previous experience in passenger transit and mobility planning and design, along with transport data analysis.
  • Clear understanding of the regulatory and legislative framework governing passenger transit services.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly to clients and colleagues.
  • Experience working directly with passenger transit clients.
  • Project management knowledge gained across transport and multidisciplinary assignments.
  • A creative, innovative, and lateral-thinking approach.

Who can apply

Applicants with the essential background are encouraged to apply, but candidates who do not meet every requirement are still welcome to be considered. WSP will review how your experience matches the role and other opportunities within the team.
