Systems Engineer

Role overview

Datacom is hiring a Systems Engineer for a permanent, full-time position. This role can be based in several New Zealand cities where Datacom has an office, including Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Tauranga, Rotorua, Hamilton, New Plymouth, and Nelson. Please note that this opportunity is restricted to New Zealand residents and citizens.

In this role, you will help design, improve, and support technology solutions that address practical business needs. You will work with Datacom’s products and tools, collaborate with client teams, and contribute to technical outcomes that make a measurable difference for organisations across New Zealand.

What you will be doing

• Providing reliable Level 2 and Level 3 support across a broad mix of technologies.
• Investigating and fixing issues in Windows Server, networking, Azure, Microsoft 365, and security platforms.
• Participating in after-hours support on a rotating roster.
• Building trusted client relationships and ensuring a smooth, professional support experience.
• Assessing customer business requirements and contributing to planning for business systems and future direction.
• Maintaining customer infrastructure and keeping technical documentation current.
• Advising on solution design and supporting implementation work and related projects.
• Spotting opportunities to improve services and promote stronger ways of working.

• Excellent skills in building and managing customer relationships.
• The ability to work within budgets, timelines, work plans, and performance expectations.
• Confident presentation and communication skills for explaining technical topics to different audiences.
• Practical knowledge of Microsoft 365 environments and collaboration tools.
• Experience with Microsoft identity and access technologies such as Azure AD, AD Connect, ADFS, and Microsoft Identity Manager.
• Familiarity with Teams, Planner, Groups, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and related Office 365 services.
• Understanding of conferencing and collaboration tools such as Teams, Poly, Neat, and Zoom.
• Knowledge of email security and archiving tools such as Office 365 ATP/EOP, Datto, and Avepoint.
• Hands-on experience with SCCM and Intune modern management.
• Ability to manage security settings, patching, and OS/application lifecycle updates.
• Broad technical knowledge of Microsoft server operating systems, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, ADFS, DHCP, and DFS.
• Exposure to virtualisation and cloud platforms including VMware, Azure, and AWS.
• Working knowledge of networking, firewalls, routing, and endpoint protection tools.
• Comfort working across Windows 11 and Mac OS environments.

This is a permanent, full-time position. Applicants must be residents or citizens of New Zealand. The role includes an after-hours support roster.
