About 9amHealth

9amHealth is an AI-powered virtual specialty care platform built to help manage expensive chronic conditions at scale. The company works with employers, health plans, and pharmacy benefit managers to provide cost-effective medical care for people living with obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Members can access specialist clinicians such as endocrinologists, obesity medicine physicians, and clinical pharmacists, along with at-home lab testing, prescription medications, and lifestyle support.

Founded in 2021, 9amHealth is supported by investors including Define Ventures, SemperVirens, 7Wire Ventures, and The Cigna Group Ventures.

Role Overview

The Senior Controller will be the company’s first dedicated internal accounting leader. This person will own the accounting function from end to end, including the chart of accounts, accounting policies, monthly close, reporting, tax compliance, 409A valuations, audit preparedness, and internal controls. The role also includes managing the outsourced accounting partner and gradually moving more accounting work in-house as the business grows.

The ideal candidate is an operator-minded accountant who ensures both tax and GAAP compliance while making the books a meaningful tool for business insight, analytics, and FP&A reporting and forecasting. You will work closely with the CFO and Director of FP&A, present to the board, and manage relationships with external auditors and tax advisors.

This is a remote, full-time position based in the United States.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build accounting processes around business decision-making, not just recordkeeping, so finance output helps leadership act faster and with better insight.
  • Design, own, and continuously refine the chart of accounts so it supports audit-ready GAAP reporting as well as analysis by program, channel, business unit, and cohort for FP&A and leadership teams.
  • Establish a fast month-end close process targeting a sustainable day 5 close across AR, AP, payroll, the general ledger, accruals, reconciliations, and intercompany activity.
  • Oversee technical accounting matters, including revenue recognition for the care model, stock-based compensation under ASC 718, and other unusual transactions, while preparing clear and supportable policies and memos.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc reporting that serves as the core input for FP&A forecasts and board reporting; use AI tools to accelerate drafting, variance analysis, and commentary without weakening controls or accuracy.
  • Handle tax compliance with the support of the external tax firm, including federal, state, and local filings, corporate income tax, sales and use tax, payroll tax, multi-state nexus, R&D credits, and franchise tax.
  • Manage annual and event-driven 409A valuation work, coordinate equity activity with legal, and oversee ISO/NSO mechanics, ASC 718 expense accounting, and related disclosures.
  • Design, document, and strengthen internal controls, prepare for a SOX-ready environment, organize audit workpapers, and lead the external audit process to a clean outcome.
  • Run the operating side of finance by managing the outsourced accounting partner, ensuring quality, service levels, and a gradual transition toward insourcing.

Requirements

  • A business-first approach that starts with what the company needs from the numbers and works backward into the accounting solution.
  • 8 to 12 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Manager role at a high-growth company.
  • CPA preferred, though equivalent deep technical accounting experience may be accepted.
  • Strong Big 4 audit background, ideally from Deloitte, EY, KPMG, or PwC.
  • Practical ERP experience with Sage Intacct or NetSuite, including chart of accounts design, system setup, and integrations.
  • Experience designing or rebuilding a chart of accounts and explaining the rationale to auditors and FP&A stakeholders.
  • Solid technical accounting knowledge, including ASC 606, ASC 842, and ASC 718, with the ability to build and defend memos and positions with auditors.
  • Experience managing federal, state, and local tax filings, either directly or through an outside tax firm, including sales/use tax, R&D credits, multi-state nexus, and payroll tax.
  • Experience with at least one 409A valuation cycle and ownership of stock compensation accounting, plus familiarity with Carta or a similar equity platform.
  • Background in healthcare or health tech is preferred, especially subscription or membership revenue, pharmacy economics, value-based care, or multi-state regulated services.
  • Strong everyday use of AI tools such as Claude and ChatGPT for memo drafting, variance summaries, research, and automation, with awareness of control considerations.
  • Experience with tools that support efficient close and documentation, such as FloQast, BlackLine, or Numeric.
  • A player-coach style, with comfort moving between hands-on accounting work and board-level presentation.
  • Clear, structured written communication that is strong enough for audit and review on the first draft.
  • Preferred extras include ERP migrations, accounting team scaling from outsourced to in-house, healthcare-specific revenue concepts, multi-state nexus work in healthcare or e-commerce, and M&A, carve-out, or fundraising diligence exposure.

Perks and Benefits

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Flexible paid time off.
  • Work-from-home flexibility.
  • Professional development budget.
  • Support for continuing education.
  • The chance to contribute to better chronic disease management and improved patient outcomes in a mission-driven environment.
  • A collaborative culture focused on making healthcare more accessible and affordable.

Work Environment

You will join a startup setting that combines the energy of an early-stage company with experienced founders who have previously built a business from the ground up. The team values collaboration, learning, and continuous improvement, and the product, infrastructure, and culture are still being shaped.

The team is distributed globally, with physical locations in San Diego, California, and Vienna, Austria. The company values people for their culture add and fit regardless of where they are based.

Diversity and Inclusion

9amHealth is committed to building a workforce that reflects the patients it serves. The company welcomes candidates from communities historically underrepresented in healthcare and the workplace, including people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, ethnic minorities, and foreign-born residents.
