Position overview
The University of Alberta is hiring a Security Liaison for its Augustana Campus in Camrose, Alberta. This is an on-site role focused on maintaining a safe campus environment by observing, reporting, and responding to incidents that may affect people, property, and day-to-day university operations.
The appointment is for one year plus one day from the hire date. The role is primarily scheduled for afternoon and evening shifts during the standard work week, Monday to Friday, for up to 40 hours per week. Additional hours may be required during emergencies or special events.
This competition is open to all applicants. However, internal candidates and former University of Alberta employees will be considered first.
Role summary
Reporting to the Security Coordinator and, when needed, the on-duty Patrol Services Division Sergeants, the Security Liaison serves as a visible campus presence and acts as the first point of contact for safety and security concerns. The role involves helping prevent loss or damage, supporting access control, and providing coverage across campus areas such as libraries, residences, and administrative buildings.
University of Alberta Protective Services operates as an approved Security Agent employer under Alberta’s Public Security Program. This position requires an individual security licence under the Security Services and Investigators Act. It does not include the broader investigation or enforcement powers associated with sworn policing functions, and the position is not trained or authorized for baton use, use-of-force training, police cycling, or criminal code arrests.
Key duties
- Patrol Augustana Campus proactively and serve as the campus’s primary contact for security-related concerns.
- Apply security rules and campus regulations in a consistent, respectful, and professional manner.
- Support access management by limiting entry to restricted areas to authorized people only.
- Offer directions, guidance, and general assistance to students, staff, visitors, and other members of the university community.
- Work with campus representatives and local police when a situation requires external coordination.
- Keep detailed and accurate records of daily activity, observations, and incidents.
- Carry out routine patrols to identify suspicious behaviour or possible security issues.
- Assist with evacuations during life-safety situations and help manage perimeter control and crowd movement during emergency response.
- Respond quickly to urgent incidents and security events during scheduled shifts.
- Coordinate daily with contracted security personnel on site.
- Handle parking enforcement duties for Augustana Campus.
- Perform welfare checks on staff and students.
- Address trespassing issues, including enforcing active trespass notices and maintaining related records.
Requirements
- High school completion meeting Alberta Education standards, or an equivalent credential.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities, with the capacity to stay composed under pressure.
- Comfort working independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
- Punctual, dependable, neatly presented, and attentive to detail.
- Valid Alberta security licence is mandatory.
- Availability for day shifts, with some weekend, evening, and holiday work as needed.
- Willingness to respond on call for access control support or critical incidents.
- Ability to pass a criminal record check and vulnerable sector check.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Google applications.
- Residence within a reasonable commuting distance of the workplace.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 non-GDL driver’s licence.
- Ability to provide a recent three-year driving abstract showing no more than six demerit points and/or no more than two moving violations in the previous two years.
Schedule and working conditions
This role is based in person at Augustana Campus in Camrose, Alberta. The position generally follows afternoon and evening shifts from Monday through Friday, with working time capped at up to 40 hours weekly. Occasional extended shifts may be required in emergencies or special events.
Employment terms
The position is governed by the applicable collective agreement between the Governors of the University of Alberta and the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).
