Role overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is seeking a Railroad Flagger in Buffalo, NY. This is a full-time field position reporting to the District Manager. The role is centered on protecting crews working on rail infrastructure by managing train movements and applying federal railroad safety standards. It supports work for major railroads, short lines, transit agencies, state rail projects, and contractors.
Compensation
Pay is set at $25 to $37 per hour, depending on experience.
Travel requirements
Travel is a major part of this job and is expected about 50% to 85% of the time on average. Extended travel, including staying away for months at a time, may be required.
Experience needed
Applicants should bring at least 2 years of relevant railroad experience, ideally with a Class 1 railroad, regional short line, transit system, state DOT rail division, railroad supplier, railroad contractor, or railroad consultant. Background in the Maintenance of Way department is preferred.
Core responsibilities
- Set up and coordinate worksite activities to keep operations running safely.
- Speak clearly with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors.
- Conduct safety briefings before work starts.
- Apply and enforce railroad, state, and federal safety rules.
- Make sure contractors complete required training.
- Identify unsafe behavior or rule violations and take action.
- Prepare daily activity reports.
- Maintain on-track safety in line with federal requirements.
Required capabilities
- Comfort with basic computer and communication tools such as Citrix, email, phone systems, and texting apps.
- Ability to work effectively on Android tablets and smartphones.
- Strong organization and close attention to detail.
- Solid verbal and written communication skills.
- Understanding of railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety practices.
- Ability to develop and sustain strong client relationships.
- Willingness to complete federal, client, and company training.
Work environment
- This is a field-based job.
- Communication in English is required for speaking, reading, and writing.
- Willingness to travel or drive long distances is necessary.
- The role involves standing for long periods and walking on uneven ground.
- Good vision is needed, including near, far, color, and peripheral vision.
- Work may take place in extreme heat and cold.
- Expect dusty and noisy conditions.
- The role may require lifting up to 50 pounds.
