Role overview

This is a long-term contract opportunity for a backend Python developer in Erlangen, Bavaria, Germany. The work follows a flexible pattern, but regular onsite presence is expected. The assignment is with a global sportswear brand that is building an AI initiative to improve digital product design for internal fashion and apparel teams.

About the project

The programme uses machine learning and 3D technologies to change how product data is created, processed, and used. The role sits on the backend side of this platform and focuses on building the API layer that connects AI-enabled functionality with internal users and workflows.

What you will do

You will develop and support backend services that power an AI-driven design platform. A major part of the work involves creating APIs for image-based and 3D data workflows, allowing the system to accept inputs, process them, and return structured outputs for designers and engineers.

• Create and maintain backend APIs that surface machine learning and AI capabilities to internal users.
• Build REST services in Python, with FastAPI or a similar framework.
• Connect APIs to AWS infrastructure, including compute and storage components.
• Handle 2D and 3D data such as images, segmentation results, textures, meshes, and Blender files.
• Assist with data preparation and validation for multimodal datasets.
• Design endpoints that process image inputs and generate outputs such as masks or derived assets.
• Work closely with AI engineers and product teams to integrate models and support usage.
• Keep backend services secure, scalable, and efficient.

What we are looking for

The preferred candidate is an experienced Python backend engineer with strong API development skills and a solid software engineering background. You should be comfortable working with visual data instead of only traditional tabular datasets, and be able to collaborate with teams building AI-led products.

• Several years of commercial experience as a Python backend developer, especially in API development.
• Proven ability to build REST APIs, ideally with FastAPI.
• Practical knowledge of AWS services such as S3 and EC2.
• Experience working with non-tabular data, particularly images and/or 3D assets.
• Exposure to computer vision or computer graphics topics such as image processing, segmentation, or visual data pipelines.
• Useful knowledge of 3D formats, rendering pipelines, or tools such as Blender.
• Experience with machine learning inference workflows, for example using PyTorch.
• Working understanding of SQL and backend data integration.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals, ideally supported by a Computer Science or similar background.

Working style and duration

The assignment is long term and follows a flexible onsite working pattern with frequent visits to the Erlangen location.

Pay

The rate is between €90 and €95 per hour.

Candidate fit

This opportunity is best suited to someone who can independently build high-quality backend services and work effectively with AI, design, and engineering teams. You do not need to be a data scientist, but you should be comfortable handling both 2D image data and 3D assets, and understand how these differ from standard datasets.
