Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade for HMP Erlestoke. This is an active, varied role focused on helping the prison operate safely and efficiently day to day.
What the job involves
You will work as part of a supportive team and handle a mix of security, visitor management, and operational support tasks. The work includes both desk-based duties and physical activity, such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison grounds.
- Carry out security checks and searches at the gate.
- Oversee incoming deliveries.
- Supervise visitors.
- Monitor phone calls and CCTV.
- Support a variety of prison operations as required.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. The role is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed under pressure, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team.
This is a fast-moving position and may be a good starting point for a career in the prison service.
Working pattern and environment
You will be expected to work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, to help maintain continuous service. Contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, though some interaction may occur depending on the prison.
Career development
The role offers practical experience and insight into how a prison functions. It can also lead to future opportunities in other prison roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this role is £30,491.
Along with base pay, you will receive:
- 25 days of annual leave at the point of joining, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated on a pro-rata basis.
- 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays.
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
- Access to the Civil Service pension scheme.
- Season ticket loans.
- Retail discounts.
- Employee Assistance Programme support.
- Cycle to Work scheme.
