Labourer - Ferry

Role overview

This casual labourer role supports operations at the George Black Ferry as part of the Department of Highways and Public Works in Dawson, Yukon Territory. The position contributes to safe, efficient ferry service for vehicles and passengers while supporting the Transportation team’s work serving Yukon communities.

What you will do

You will help with the safe loading, unloading, and positioning of vehicles and passengers on the ferry. The role also includes keeping safety conditions in good order, operating ferry ramps, assisting with emergency drills, and completing routine maintenance and safety inspections.

Essential qualifications

Applicants should show experience using a range of hand tools and experience working with the public while making judgment calls that protect travelling public safety. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may also be considered.

The preferred candidate will bring strong safety awareness, service orientation, reliable work habits, and a willingness to learn. Good oral communication, adaptability, and teamwork are important, along with an interest in river safety and small boats.

Conditions of employment

This is a designated public service position. A transportation of dangerous goods (TDG) certificate must be obtained within one month of hire.

Job requirements

The work may involve travel across the territory, exposure to difficult weather, and extended periods away from headquarters. You must be able to work outdoors for up to 8 hours in all weather, use personal protective equipment, wear steel-toed work boots, and lift up to 50 lbs.
