Company overview
PTM Food is a leading North American partner for product development and manufacturing support across the food industry. The company combines expertise in food science, biochemistry, culinary arts, and manufacturing design to help clients create practical, launch-ready products. Its work centers on finding key market insights and turning brand ideas into high-quality offerings that can succeed in both retail and commercial settings.
Role overview
PTM Food is looking for a Laboratory Technician to assist with research and development work as well as pilot plant activities. This is a hands-on position where you will run and calibrate laboratory equipment, help carry out formulation trials on pilot-scale machines, and support food scientists in moving early concepts toward scalable products. It is well suited to someone from food science or a related field who wants direct exposure to product development and manufacturing processes.
Key duties
- Use a variety of laboratory and pilot-scale instruments to assist with product development and quality evaluation.
- Set up, calibrate, clean, and carry out basic upkeep of lab equipment so results remain accurate and dependable.
- Work alongside food scientists during formulation trials on pilot equipment by measuring ingredients, mixing, processing, and logging outcomes.
- Prepare samples for testing and perform standard physical, chemical, and sensory assessments while recording procedures, observations, and results in lab records and digital systems.
- Keep the laboratory neat, orderly, and compliant with GMP, food safety, and OSHA expectations.
- Monitor stocks of raw materials, reagents, and lab consumables, and alert the team when supplies need to be replenished.
- Help R&D, QA, and Production teams with sample preparation, data gathering, and trial execution.
Qualifications and requirements
- Solid general lab experience and prior work in a laboratory setting as a Laboratory Technician or in a similar position.
- Hands-on ability with lab equipment, including correct setup, operation, calibration, and basic maintenance.
- Strong quality-control mindset, with the discipline to follow standard test methods, document findings, and spot unusual results or deviations.
- Good analytical thinking to review test data, notice patterns or inconsistencies, and explain results clearly to the team.
- High attention to detail, strong organization, and the ability to handle several tasks in a busy environment.
- Exposure to food science, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related subject is helpful; experience in food or beverage labs is a plus.
- Working understanding of safety, sanitation, and regulatory expectations in a laboratory or food production environment.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Comfort working full time on-site in the New York City Metropolitan Area and collaborating with a varied, cross-functional team.
