Role overview
Leidos Airborne Solutions Australia is hiring an Electronic Observer to join its airborne surveillance team. The position is based in Darwin or Broome and includes 6 weeks of annual leave. This role is suited to someone who wants a non-standard career path, is comfortable working in aircraft, and is interested in mission-focused work that supports border protection and search-and-rescue activities.
The team works with advanced mission systems and surveillance technology across Australian and Pacific locations. No aviation background is required, as full training is provided. The role sits within a workplace that is certified as family-friendly and also offers progression into the Electronic Mission Coordinator pathway.
About the organisation
Leidos supports government and commercial customers through technology-driven mission and digital solutions. In Australia, the airborne solutions team carries out special missions such as maritime surveillance and life-saving operations, backed by aviation bases, a 24/7 operations centre, a systems integration lab, and a mission equipment service centre.
What the role involves
As an Airborne Surveillance Observer, you will work on a highly modified regional turboprop aircraft fitted with specialist surveillance and mission equipment. While airborne, you will report to the Electronic Mission Coordinator and work closely with the wider crew to capture, manage, and securely pass on operational data and intelligence to clients and stakeholders.
The work includes civil maritime surveillance missions and may involve travel, deployments, and flying to a range of locations across Australia and the Pacific. The environment is predominantly aviation-based and can include different weather conditions.
Training and job conditions
Training begins in Darwin or Broome on the start date and continues for 16 weeks. During this period, no extended leave outside normal arrangements will be available. The role is covered by the Surveillance AU Pilot & Observer Enterprise Agreement 2024-2028.
Candidate profile
You should bring a valid Senior First Aid Certificate or an equivalent qualification, intermediate computer and IT system capability, and the ability to work safely and confidently in an aviation environment. You must also be able to commit to the 16-week training program in Darwin or Broome.
The position requires a person with suitable health and fitness levels in line with the pre-employment medical and Civil Aviation Safety Authority medical standards. Strong personal integrity, confidentiality, teamwork, independent working ability, and relationship-building skills are also important.
Eligibility
Applicants must be Australian citizens, be at least 18 years old at the time of application, and be willing to obtain and hold a Baseline AGSVA security clearance. Some applicants may also need to satisfy International Traffic in Arms Regulations requirements, which can limit eligibility for dual nationals, permanent residents, or former nationals of certain countries.
Recruitment process
The hiring process includes 1 to 2 interviews, background checks, a police check, and a pre-employment medical. The employer also offers accessible recruitment support for candidates who need additional assistance during the application process.
Culture, inclusion and benefits
Leidos promotes an inclusive workplace where people from diverse backgrounds are welcomed and supported. The organisation has advocacy groups for women and allies, young professionals, defence and emergency services, accessibility and abilities, and Pride+. Broader employee benefits include competitive compensation, health and wellness programs, income protection, paid leave, and retirement support.
Additional information
The employer encourages candidates who meet most, but not necessarily all, of the criteria to apply. The role is described as mission-driven, fast-paced, and focused on delivering smarter solutions through diverse perspectives and teamwork.
Scam awareness
The company warns applicants to be cautious of fraudulent job offers using its name. It states that it will never request payment during the hiring process, will not send money in advance of work being performed, and will only communicate through official company email systems.
Equal opportunity
Leidos states that it is an equal opportunities employer and considers applicants without discrimination based on protected characteristics, including race, sex, age, nationality, disability, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, veteran status, and other legally protected grounds.
