Role overview
Microsoft is seeking a Data Center Technician to support hardware deployment, equipment diagnostics, troubleshooting, and controlled decommissioning work in a data center environment. In this role, you will help maintain service quality while following standard operating procedures for staging, setup, labeling, cabling, grounding, and refresh activities.
This position sits within Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I), the group responsible for the infrastructure behind Microsoft cloud services such as Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Microsoft Azure. The team operates across a large global footprint of data centers and supports services used by more than 1 billion customers and over 20 million businesses worldwide.
The role is designed to build deeper knowledge of data center processes, strengthen mentoring and teamwork skills, and provide exposure to security, data management, and operational best practices. Responsibilities
- Run diagnostics and resolve hardware issues by following established procedures, identifying root causes quickly, and replacing defective parts with limited impact on customers and business operations.
- Carry out post-work checks to confirm that grounding, staging, labeling, cabling, and other setup steps comply with safety requirements, deployment standards, and Network Design Tasks.
- Handle hardware removals for straightforward changes and refresh work such as memory upgrades and rebuilds, using standard processes and only light supervision.
- Report, communicate, and escalate incidents to the relevant data center operations managers, technician leads, and engineering specialists when needed.
- Support other technicians and provide guidance when tasks are difficult or technically complex.
- Complete the required role-based training, learn from experienced teammates, and gain practical on-the-job experience.
- Contribute to a collaborative team environment by sharing updates, participating in meetings, asking questions, and staying informed about team progress.
- Take ownership of service quality, task completion, user experience, and the condition of the data center facility.
- Work in alignment with Microsoft’s culture and core values.
Requirements
- High school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
- Basic understanding of computer hardware and components.
- Prior experience supporting IT equipment or related technology.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements.
- Willingness to complete the Microsoft Cloud background check at hire or transfer and again every two years thereafter.
- Preferred: experience supporting IT equipment or related technology.
- Preferred: relevant certifications such as CompTIA A+, Server+, Network+, or Basic Structure Cabling (BSC).
- The role remains open for at least 5 days and accepts applications on an ongoing basis until filled.
