What this role does
The Data Center Technician II supports customers and internal teams through phone, email, in-person interaction, and case tracking tools. This position is responsible for handling trouble tickets and remote hands requests from start to finish, maintaining package logs, keeping the site clean and ready for tours, and supporting the installation of circuits such as Ethernet, SONET, and dark fiber. The role also includes monitoring critical building and security systems, raising issues when needed, and helping enforce security standards across the facility.
Responsibilities
- Build strong customer relationships and respond to calls and emails promptly and professionally.
- Complete customer installations, testing, and closure tasks for hardware, software, and service orders within required timelines.
- Troubleshoot infrastructure alarms and technical issues, and escalate to on-call or engineering teams when required.
- Carry out security walk-throughs, manage visitor and customer sign-in procedures, and escort third parties to approved work areas.
- Track time spent on installs, outages, remote hands work, and other ticketed tasks, and submit timesheets on time.
- Keep the facility clean and ready for customer or auditor tours at all times.
- Participate in the market on-call rotation as needed.
- Assist with equipment readings, customer audits, and compliance-related support work.
- Follow cabling standards and maintain accurate records for tools, test gear, and devices.
- Support vendor payment processing using PR/CSP/CP workflows and help internal teams meet compliance requirements.
- Assist with customer and auditor tours and support vendor maintenance activities across the data center.
- Perform other assigned duties as required.
Requirements
- High school diploma is required; a related college degree is preferred.
- Prior experience in a NOC, SOC, IOC, or data center environment is preferred.
- At least 2 to 4 years of experience, or an equivalent ability to perform the role’s duties.
- Dependable, responsible, and able to work honestly with minimal supervision.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to learn new tools and procedures quickly and apply them right away.
- Capable of making sound judgments and escalating issues according to internal process.
- Working knowledge of Windows operating systems on both desktop and server platforms.
- Basic troubleshooting knowledge for hardware components such as drives, memory, and motherboards is helpful.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Familiarity with DS1, DS3, Ethernet, and fiber circuits is an advantage.
- Ability to install and neatly manage copper, coaxial, Cat5/6, fiber, and other network cabling and connectors.
- Basic understanding of switches, firewalls, and managed storage is a plus.
- Reliable transportation is required.
