About the Role

Ball Corporation is looking for a Back End Specialist to join its Launch Team. The position sits within a global sustainable packaging business focused on aluminium products that can be recycled again and again. This role is centered on supporting new builds, new production lines, and line conversion start-ups, especially in spray and necker areas.

The specialist will own a specific process area depending on prior experience and team assignment. The main focus is to drive efficiency and reduce spoilage while always putting safety first. Additional goals include managing material usage, production supplies, and environmental compliance in line with area-specific requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and reinforce a safety-first culture by following safe working methods, confirming equipment compliance, and coaching new colleagues on safety expectations.
  • Support installation, setup, commissioning, and early production by providing practical technical help during equipment start-up and ramp-up.
  • Act as the on-site subject matter expert for assigned process areas and guide the line toward stable, dependable, high-performing operation.
  • Deliver structured training to plant teams through a mix of on-the-job instruction and classroom learning to strengthen operator and mechanic capability in operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and quality.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, chemical, and process issues during start-up to stabilize production and build team awareness.
  • Take part in root cause analysis and structured problem-solving to eliminate repeat issues and improve long-term reliability.
  • Review and validate SOPs, work instructions, and training materials so they match new equipment, start-up conditions, and best practices.
  • Encourage food safety, sanitation, and housekeeping standards so startup activities and equipment remain aligned with internal and regulatory requirements.
  • Check that critical parts, tools, and materials are available and flag future operational needs early.
  • Work closely with Engineering, Production, and Quality to move the line from start-up mode into steady-state operation once performance targets are reached.
  • Document lessons learned and share them to build better practices for future projects and continuous improvement across the network.
  • Meet efficiency and spoilage targets for new builds, new lines, and line conversions according to approved start-up curves.
  • Work as part of a combined start-up team, sharing accountability for launch success while leading the assigned process area.
  • Train and develop site personnel during recruitment and start-up to build process understanding and enable independent operation.
  • Provide emergency breakdown support to reduce downtime and restore production quickly during the critical launch phase.
  • Help with size conversions so local teams can carry out safe, efficient, repeatable changeovers.
  • Identify, apply, and share best practices to improve future start-ups and strengthen long-term operational performance.
  • Support implementation of BOE standards to level 3 across safety, quality, business management, and maintenance pillar elements within the assignment scope.

Requirements

  • Mechanical or electrical qualification.
  • Training or teaching qualification at least to Train The Trainer level.
  • Solid knowledge of the full can-making process, with specialist expertise in at least one area.
  • Ability to pass process knowledge on to others effectively.
  • Strong ability in equipment setup, troubleshooting, optimization, and supporting line performance.
  • Competent computer skills for data analysis and report writing.
  • English communication skills at a minimum conversational level.
  • At least 5 years of experience in can manufacturing.
  • Experience using basic problem-solving methods and Lean fundamentals.
  • Ability to mentor and support less experienced team members.
  • Attention to detail and strong adherence to specifications.
  • Good communication across departments and levels.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration mindset.
  • Experience with line launches or rebuild projects is preferred.
  • Ownership mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and reducing waste.
