Program Manager

Role overview

This is a senior programme leadership position focused on delivering complex, high-value initiatives in a technically advanced setting. You will partner with the Programme Director to keep key programmes on track and drive outcomes across time, cost, and quality targets while maintaining customer confidence and supporting long-term business success.

The position is available in Reading or Glasgow and follows a hybrid pattern of 3 days per week on site.

Business area

You will be part of the Optronics & Missile Electronics division, which supports decision-making by helping forces access the right information at the right time. The team has a long heritage in Optronics development across military, scientific, and commercial applications, serving Air, Land, and Sea markets.

Key responsibilities

• Direct and support a cross-functional programme team to deliver against schedule, cost, and performance commitments.
• Oversee programme finances, including budget management, margin enhancement, and prompt invoicing.
• Set up and maintain effective governance, reporting, and KPI structures for programme oversight.
• Spot, assess, and manage risks and opportunities to protect delivery confidence and programme results.
• Develop strong working relationships with customers, suppliers, and internal partners.

Experience and skills needed

• Background delivering large and complex programmes in engineering, manufacturing, or industrial environments.
• Demonstrated leadership experience, including building and supporting high-performing teams.
• Strong stakeholder management ability, with confidence engaging senior customers and suppliers.
• Commercial and financial awareness, including budgeting, forecasting, and managing business performance.
• Capability in programme governance, risk control, and project controls in complex settings.

Security clearance requirement

This role is subject to security restrictions and requires Security Clearance (SC). Having SC already would be an advantage, but the appointed candidate must obtain and maintain SC clearance before starting.

To qualify for full SC, you will usually need to have lived in the UK for the last 5 years. In some cases, a minimum of 3 years' UK residence within the last 5 years may be accepted, provided additional overseas checks can be completed.
