Android Mobile Engineer

Role overview

Air New Zealand is seeking an Android Mobile Engineer to join its Customer Touchpoints team in Auckland. This newly created position will help define and grow the company’s Android mobile capability while delivering smooth, reliable travel experiences for customers in New Zealand and globally.

You will work with product, design, QA, and engineering teams to build customer-facing mobile features and contribute to the ongoing evolution of a large-scale digital airline platform. The role offers the chance to influence technical direction, improve engineering practices, and make a visible impact on the customer app experience.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and improve native Android applications using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
• Take features from initial idea through release and post-launch support.
• Work closely with product managers, designers, QA, and engineers in an agile environment.
• Support CI/CD workflows, automated testing, and app store release activities.
• Build solutions that meet standards for performance, accessibility, security, and ease of use.
• Identify technical debt and help improve the long-term maintainability of the mobile platform.
• Provide dependable application support and contribute to ongoing platform improvements.

What the role requires

• At least 2 years of software engineering experience, including native Android development.
• Strong hands-on experience with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
• Understanding of mobile app architecture, engineering patterns, and release processes.
• Experience with testing tools, CI/CD pipelines, and version control systems.
• Familiarity with RESTful APIs, mobile dependency management, observability, and crash investigation.
• Knowledge of Agile or Lean delivery methods and collaborative product-team environments.
• Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to work across different disciplines.
• A relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience.
• Exposure to backend-for-frontend approaches and cloud platforms such as AWS is beneficial but not mandatory.
