About the role
One Stop Stores Ltd is hiring a Shift Leader to work in its Billinge, England store. This role sits within a busy retail setting where every shift can bring different challenges. You will lead duty shifts, bring the team together to keep the store clean, fully stocked, and aligned with customer expectations, and support improvements through coaching, feedback, and a practical, hands-on approach. You will also help maintain a safe environment for colleagues and shoppers.
What you will do
- Lead the team so customers get the smoothest and easiest shopping experience possible.
- Take charge of opening and closing duties and ensure decisions are made with customer needs, colleague wellbeing, and safety in mind.
- Act as the main point of contact for everyday operational questions when the Store Manager is unavailable.
- Help organise seasonal, community, and charity activities to create an inclusive store atmosphere.
- Keep the store tidy, clean, and visually appealing at all times.
- Focus replenishment on products that matter most to customers.
- Make sure shelf-edge labels and point-of-sale displays are accurate and well presented.
- Respond quickly to overcharge issues and take steps to prevent them happening again.
- Manage customer queues proactively to keep the shopping experience positive.
- Coordinate colleagues so daily priorities are completed and breaks are arranged around trading needs.
- Use your store knowledge to help drive practical improvements and support others in doing the same.
- Follow health and safety procedures and ensure the team does too.
- Share information clearly with the team so everyone stays informed.
- Look for simpler ways of working and raise ideas with the Store Manager.
- Put customers first in every task and adapt service to suit individual needs.
- Be available to handle customer questions and help leave them with a positive impression.
- Recognise and celebrate colleagues who deliver excellent service.
- Identify barriers to great service and help remove them.
- Handle colleague queries in the Store Manager’s absence, or escalate them when needed.
- Ensure enough colleagues are scheduled and find cover quickly when short-term absence or sickness occurs.
- Serve as a keyholder and attend alarm call-outs when required to protect store safety and security.
- Monitor internal communications and make sure messages are acted on promptly.
- Coordinate colleagues based on customer demand and store operations, and report any shift issues to the Store Manager.
- Split your time between service and replenishment priorities as needed.
- Support the Store Manager with absence management, including return-to-work interviews for CSA colleagues and tracking absence triggers according to policy.
- Build strong working relationships with the Area Manager and People Partner so you can escalate issues, seek advice, and benefit from coaching.
- If the store includes a Post Office Local, you will also be responsible for day-to-day post office operations and must pass a Post Office financial and criminal conviction background check; failure to pass will result in the job offer being withdrawn.

What we offer
One Stop aims to make everyday life simpler for local customers by offering quality products, value, and friendly service. As part of the Tesco Group, it combines the scale of a major organisation with the community feel of a neighbourhood store. The company is focused on creating a welcoming place for customers and colleagues and welcomes people who want to grow with the team.
Flexible working is openly discussed, and the company is happy to explore arrangements that support different life situations, including career starters, carers, parents, people nearing retirement, and others with changing needs.
Colleagues can also access a wider benefits package, with more details available through the careers page. As an independent business within the Tesco Group, the benefits offered may differ from those at Tesco itself.
Community and inclusion
One Stop places strong value on community involvement, including support for local charities and groups as well as national partnerships. Over the last ten years, the business has raised more than £10.4 million for good causes and donated the equivalent of 1.6 million meals through work with FareShare and Olio.
The company promotes an inclusive workplace where people from all backgrounds are welcomed and treated with fairness and respect. It is a Disability Confident Leader (Level 3) and provides reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process, including interviews.
