Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is recruiting an Operational Support Grade for HMP Bullingdon. This is an active, varied position that helps keep a busy prison operating safely and efficiently. The work combines desk-based tasks with hands-on duties, so it suits someone who is comfortable switching between office-style work and more physical activity.
What the role involves
In this post, you will support the everyday running of the prison as part of a cooperative team. Typical duties include security checks and searches at the entrance, handling incoming deliveries, overseeing visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. You may also be required to lift and carry items and walk across the prison site to escort vehicles.
Transport and location notes
Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though this is not always mandatory unless the vacancy specifically says so. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to and from work punctually. You should think carefully about the site location and your travel arrangements before applying.
Driving licence requirement
Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This allows the holder to drive vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer weighing up to 750kg.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The role is a strong fit for someone who communicates well, stays composed when pressure builds, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team. It is a fast-moving environment with a variety of shifts, including evenings, nights, and weekends.
Career development
This role offers a chance to build practical knowledge of prison operations. It can also lead to progression into other prison-based roles, including the opportunity to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £29,432. Alongside base pay, the organisation offers training and development opportunities, career progression, 25 days of annual leave on appointment rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, a generous Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional information
This is described as an extraordinary job with a meaningful public service impact. Depending on the prison, contact with prisoners may be occasional, but it is generally limited compared with prison officer roles. The role is intended for someone who wants to contribute to safety, order, and the smooth running of the prison.
