Role overview

This position is for an NPI Engineer within Manufacturing Engineering, based in IBC, Bangalore and reporting to the ME PCBA Lead. The role sits at the intersection of Ather’s design teams and EMS partner factories, where you will lead the manufacturing readiness and industrialization of PCB assemblies end to end.

You will be responsible for making sure each PCBA is designed and built for manufacturability, reliability, and scale. The work includes early-stage DFM/DFA/DFT inputs, supplier-side execution of the 4Ms (Man, Machine, Material, Method), and maintaining Ather’s quality standard from prototype through volume production.

The role requires strong knowledge of SMT and PTH processes, soldering standards such as IPC/J-STD, PPAP expectations, and practical manufacturing problem solving across internal and external cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

Lead the development of PCB assemblies by working closely with the design team.
Review PCBA designs across different product stages and drive manufacturability improvements.
Support cross-functional teams from project kickoff through the manufacturing phase for assigned PCBA programs.
Partner with designers to resolve DFM concerns until all issues are closed.
Build the data package by gathering and organizing internal documents for EMS partners.
Check and confirm tooling requirements at the EMS supplier end.
Coordinate with EMS partners to ensure all 4M conditions are ready for prototype and NPI builds.
Own the successful completion of PPAP and related supplier audit requirements.
Act as the PCBA process engineer, NPI engineer, and technical single point of contact for the EMS partner.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in engineering in any discipline.
8 to 12 years of industry experience, preferably in manufacturing engineering.
Proven ability to drive new product introduction at EMS partner locations.
Capability to identify technical risks and plan mitigation for 4M-related issues.
Hands-on experience working with multiple cross-functional teams.
Knowledge of PCBA and solderability standards such as IPC-A-610, IPC-600, and J-STD.
Strong understanding of DFM, DFT, and DFA for PCBA.
Deep expertise in PCBA process engineering.
Working knowledge of SMT, manual soldering, wave soldering, selective soldering, conformal coating, and potting.
Experience designing SMT stencils, wave pallets, and assembly tools and jigs.
Familiarity with PPAP audit requirements.
Understanding of PCBA- and unit-level testing requirements.
Ability to interpret test plans and operator work instructions for test execution.
Experience coordinating with suppliers on ICT and other test jig development for new products.
Exposure to box build activities and special manufacturing processes.
Ability to evaluate, introduce, validate, and standardize new assembly technologies and processes locally.
First-principles understanding of manufacturing, quality, and testing systems.
Willingness to learn beyond one’s core specialization and work across multiple processes.
Ability to assess and compute business cases.
Bonus familiarity with APQP, problem-solving tools, Gerber Viewer, Valor, and Allegro.
