Role overview

Auckland Council is seeking Land Development Engineers to contribute to the planning and delivery of Auckland’s growth. This role suits a civil engineer with hands-on land development experience and a good grasp of New Zealand’s regulatory environment.

The position is based in South Auckland and offers flexibility in working arrangements where possible. It is a varied, high-impact role within the Regulatory Engineering team, supporting the Council’s Building and Resource Consenting functions.

In this role, you will help assess development proposals, building consents, infrastructure works, and engineering approvals. You will also work closely with asset owners such as Auckland Transport, Watercare, Healthy Waters, and Parks to ensure new public infrastructure meets required standards.

The work includes projects ranging from private residential and commercial developments to major subdivision schemes, including those connected to Kāinga Ora. The team processes a wide range of matters and is responsible for the acceptance of more than $130 million in new public assets each year through the engineering approvals process.

What you will do

  • Review land development and civil engineering matters linked to building and resource consent activity.
  • Assess proposals for infrastructure works and engineering approvals.
  • Work with internal council teams, external consultants, development sector stakeholders, and asset owners.
  • Contribute to safe, sustainable, and high-quality infrastructure outcomes across Auckland.
  • Coordinate with multiple stakeholders while maintaining a customer-focused approach.
  • Manage competing priorities and provide practical engineering input in a fast-moving environment.

What we are looking for

We are looking for an engineer who combines technical knowledge with strong people skills and a service mindset. You should be comfortable working collaboratively, communicating clearly, and building productive relationships with a range of stakeholders. Interest in supporting Auckland’s future and working with Māori and within Māori paradigms will be valued.

Experience and knowledge required

  • A recognised tertiary qualification in civil engineering.
  • At least 3 years of experience in land development or civil engineering.
  • Working knowledge of the Resource Management Act, Building Act, Local Government Act, and related regulatory requirements.
  • Practical site experience on development projects in New Zealand.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Good time management and coordination skills.
  • Customer service orientation.
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate with Māori and work within Māori paradigms.

Advantageous knowledge

Familiarity with Auckland’s Unitary Plan and the Auckland Design Manual, including land development codes of practice, would be a strong advantage.
