About Girl Effect
Girl Effect creates media and technology products that young girls in Africa and Asia want to use, trust, and rely on. The organization reaches more than 50 million girls through safe, practical information on health, education, and relationships, helping them expand what they believe is possible. Its chatbot products in India, South Africa, and Kenya have served nearly 3 million users by answering sensitive questions at scale and connecting people to real-world services. Over the next five years, the organization aims to grow this reach further and believes its chatbot solutions could support 30 million girls by 2030 through highly personalized AI-supported experiences.
Role Overview
This Data Scientist position sits at the intersection of GenAI, product development, user safety, and behavior change. The role will help shape Girl Effect’s next generation of conversational tools, including long-form interventions that support mental wellbeing and other critical needs for vulnerable young users.
Technical Environment
The work is built on Python services that connect with GPT from OpenAI, Gemini from Google, and Claude from Anthropic. The stack also includes a custom retrieval-augmented generation pipeline, live performance tracking, and safety guardrails hosted on Azure. Products are delivered across WhatsApp, MoyaApp, Telegram, and custom web applications.
What You Will Do
- Develop and improve GenAI and LLM-powered solutions using the organization’s existing AI stack and orchestration tools.
- Contribute to architectural decisions and support the broader software development lifecycle from design through delivery.
- Build and maintain responsible AI practices, with a strong focus on safety, accuracy, and secure user interactions.
- Define evaluation methods and metrics that help measure whether chatbot outputs are useful, reliable, and appropriate.
- Collaborate closely with data scientists, subject matter experts, and non-technical teams to align technical work with mental health, safeguarding, and behavior-change goals.
- Own technical priorities in an agile setting, including roadmap planning, experimentation, and code review.
- Represent the organization’s data science perspective in partner discussions and public-facing settings when needed.
What We’re Looking For
- A postgraduate qualification in Data Science or a closely related field.
- Proven hands-on experience working with large language models and generative AI systems.
- Solid understanding of digital platforms, tools, and the end-to-end software development lifecycle.
- Strong analytical thinking, structured problem-solving, and the ability to support major technical choices.
- Excellent communication skills with the confidence to move between technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong organizational ability, with experience managing multiple priorities in an agile environment.
- Comfort with collaborative work across teams and levels of seniority.
- A clear commitment to mission-led work and improving outcomes for girls and young women.
