Role overview
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is hiring a Custodian II for its Lubbock State Supported Living Center. This full-time, regular position supports a mission-driven environment that serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who may be medically fragile or have behavioral challenges. The role is focused on keeping offices, premises, and resident living areas clean, sanitary, and safe.
The facility is located in Lubbock, Texas, at 3401 N University Ave. The position is nonexempt, paid monthly, and belongs to Salary Group TEXAS-A-08. The shift is day shift, with first-shift hours. Telework is not eligible for this role, although the posting notes that telework may be possible in some HHS positions depending on policy and business needs.
This posting is for both internal and external applicants.
Compensation and schedule
The salary range for this role is $2,694.70 to $3,269.08 per month. The job is full time and regular, with a day shift. Work may require a specific schedule, rotating shifts, extended shifts, overtime, on-call coverage, weekends, and holidays when operational needs require it.
What you will do
This position performs moderately complex custodial work across assigned spaces, which may include office buildings, facility grounds, and resident living units. Work includes cleaning, dusting, disinfecting, sanitizing, maintaining floors and restrooms, and supporting a safe and healthy environment for residents, staff, and visitors.
The role also involves using floor-care equipment such as strippers, buffers, vacuums, and extractors; maintaining custodial tools and equipment; requesting and restocking supplies; helping inspect buildings and equipment; reporting repair needs; and assisting with minor building and equipment repairs or installations. The custodian may also train other custodial staff and take over duties for other custodians as needed.
Additional responsibilities include maintaining exterior areas around the building, removing trash and debris, keeping records and documentation accurate and timely, safeguarding confidential information, and helping support disaster response or continuity of operations assignments when required.
Work environment and expectations
The job requires a person who can work well with co-workers and residents, follow instructions, and respond to changing operational needs. The position may require alternate shifts, reassignment to different locations, and participation in emergency response or recovery activities.
Requirements and qualifications
Applicants must meet one of the initial screening criteria: graduation from a standard high school or equivalent, paid work experience in any field, or unpaid housekeeping/custodial service experience.
Preferred experience includes at least six months in custodial or environmental services work in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel, or similar setting.
Required knowledge and abilities include familiarity with cleaning methods, sanitation standards, infection control, and inventory control. Candidates should be comfortable using custodial chemicals and building maintenance tools, following both written and verbal instructions, training or supervising others when needed, lifting up to 50 pounds, standing or walking on hard floors for long periods, and working irregular hours.
A valid Texas driver license is required, or it must be obtained within 90 days after the hire date if the person will drive a state vehicle. If the applicant has an out-of-state license, an original certified driving record from that state must be provided. Driving eligibility must also meet HHSC Fleet Management policy.
Additional conditions
Applicants must be at least 18 years old to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Male applicants between 18 and 25 years old must be registered with Selective Service.
Selected candidates must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, a pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks that include CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, and the HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Employees at State Supported Living Centers are also subject to random drug testing.
The role may require flexibility in work hours, overtime, extended hours, weekends, and holidays. Depending on the program and position needs, additional background and due diligence checks may apply.
HHSC uses E-Verify, and new hires must bring I-9 documentation on the first day of work.
Reasonable accommodations are available during the hiring and interview process for qualified individuals with disabilities.
